Dealing with pride

“So now, with God as our witness, and in the sight of all Israel—the Lord’s assembly—I give you this charge. Be careful to obey all the commands of the Lord your God, so that you may continue to possess this good land and leave it to your children as a permanent inheritance. “And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the Lord sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. So take this seriously. The Lord has chosen you to build a Temple as his sanctuary. Be strong, and do the work.” 1 Chronicles 28:8-10

There is a saying, “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.” When one assumes knowing everything, it could easily lead to pride. From the text, David is giving his son, Solomon, a wise counsel. This advice took place when Solomon was about to take the mantle of leadership from his father. There was a great opportunity for him to lead the Israelites during a time of peace and prosperity. He was also given the charge to build the Temple for Yahweh. David taught that he was the one who was supposed to do this yet he was told that it was not him but his son. Yet behind all these prosperity, peace, and success is a potential destruction due to pride. Unfortunately, this happened to King Solomon. He gave in to the lure of wealth, women and pride. He did not take the wise counsel of his father and this led to the downfall of his kingdom. You might not have the riches or power Solomon had. Nevertheless, the lure of pride that had caused him not to take his father’s advice and the wisdom that comes from God is also the pride that you need to overcome. He thought that he doesn’t need godly wisdom and that he could just follow his own understanding. It will always be good to take godly wisdom. God knows what is best for you and He knows you better than you know yourself. Submitting to His will and the leading of the Holy Spirit will help you overcome pride. The gospel was not only the best news you had ever heard when you acknowledge Jesus by faith; it is the best news that you will have today because it is by the gospel that will prevent you from becoming prideful that could destroy your life.

Blessings.
