Godly loving

“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. Matthew 5:43-47

You seemed to be a nice person yet there are those who do not like you. Then because you want to be liked by people, you start to find ways on how to please them. Then you realized that no matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to please everyone. So you return others’ animosity toward you with the same hostility. There are times that you find it difficult to respond in kindness when you think you are not treated with respect. Even when criticism seemed to be constructive becomes an irritant. It seemed to be that there are some people that you just could not stand. How you wished that you will not see them around. The Lord Jesus Christ has sober words to say on how you ought to respond to people who hurt you. Jesus’ admonition to you is that you bless and you love them. You are called to do good for them and to pray for them. This is easier said than done. In practice, if it is not difficult, it is impossible to do. The reason why is because you allow pride to overcome you. You become too proud to love them unconditionally and this might also be the reason why they could not love you either. Think about the life you have in Christ? You are called to act out His life that is in you. If you insist with your pride, the cycle of refusing to love those difficult to love will continue on. Ask God to lead you so you could take the path He took; path of abundant, unconditional, selfless, and sacrificial love. God can make your heart humble and fill you through the Spirit with the love He produces because you yielded to Him. “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love...” (Galatians 5:22). In this way, you could choose to love and bless even those that do not like you. Today, make the choice to love first. Some people may not like you, choose to respond by praying for them and trust that God will help you grow so that loving others-- even those who are difficult to love-- becomes a part of who you are.

Blessings,
