Hear, my son, your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching; indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head and ornaments about your neck. My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. If they say, “Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause; let us swallow them alive like Sheol, even whole, as those who go down to the pit; We will find all kinds of precious wealth, we will fill our houses with spoil; Throw in your lot with us, we shall all have one purse,” My son, do not walk in the way with them. Keep your feet from their path. Proverbs 1:8-15
God wants parents to reflect qualities that He values. God’s love is persistent and unchanging irrespective of your rebellion. Since you have professed faith in Him, you are called upon to manifest such love. The first place this love should be manifested is in your home. Your love to your children should not be conditional love. Your affection to them should not be based on their performance. When children see this kind of love flowing out from your life, it becomes an example and together with your verbal testimony about your faith, they will be drawn to the God you believe and worship. They are observing how you place your trust and dependence on God in times of struggles. They will grow up seeing this example and they will be reminded how God helped. Your belief in God’s adequacy and evidence of His provision will leave a strong impression on them. This kind of testimony will leave your children an example that when they are faced with choices, they will be reminded of how you lived out your faith and trust in God to help guide them. When they hear you pray will help them learn to communicate with God, and listen to Him. How you respond to God’s answer to your prayer as you make decision for the family will motivate your children finding direction for their lives by seeking God’s will. It is good to pray and ask God to guide your children and to follow God’s plans for their lives and not be swayed by the world, but the efficacy of this prayer will be aided by your consistency in following and living out God’s will for your life. Ask the Lord to help you grow in every aspect of your Christian life and be consistent to pray for and with your children regularly.
Blessings,
