The One Who intercedes for us
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory. Romans 8:26-30
Believers should not to be overly disturbed by the difficulties of life. This is what Paul has pointed out from the text. The frustrations and futility inherent in this life are not proof against the Christian hope. Instead, he admonished believers to look at times of testing as opportunities for growth. It is easy to become discouraged during times of trials especially when we do not know how to bring to God our concerns. This is at times the reason why we lack the desire to pray. We are very conscious that we will not do it right for we do not know what to say to God. Paul realized this area of weakness for he himself was a fellow struggler. Yet he knew that believers are not left to their own devices for God provided the Spirit to intercede for them. “The Holy Spirit helps us,” says Paul. It is the Spirit of God that gives us what we need so we can overcome our weaknesses. When left on our own with weaknesses and all, will lead to more problem. It is not only that we do not pray very well, we are also not good in determining what our needs are and what are wants. This is why it is important that we yield to the Holy Spirit. He intercedes for believers with “groans that words cannot express” (v. 26). It is the Holy Spirit’s role to guide us in knowing God’s will. He provides us wisdom so we could live following His will even in the midst of suffering. This is why we need not give up and faint in times of suffering for we are not left on our own. God has plan why you go through trials in life. He always has our best interest in His heart and knows how we can be benefitted even in times of trials. Ultimately, His goal is for you to reflect the image of Jesus Christ in your life and to bring glory in His name. Trials may bring about discouragement but always bear in mind that through it all God is working out a great purpose.
