Don’t stifle the Spirit. Don’t despise prophecies, but test all things. Hold on to what is good. Stay away from every kind of evil. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. And may your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:19-24 The Apostle Paul, from the text emphasized God’s plan to create in us a life worthy of His calling. It is a life characterized by godliness. He was resolved to the reality of this experience in a believer’s life not because he knew he could do it but God who promised to be faithful to all those who believed Him will do it. We do not put out the fire the Spirit brought to us within. We do this when we give in to temptations. When we act contrary to God’s desire, we suppress the Spirit’s working. We quench the Spirit when we do not produce the fruit He wants to be manifested in our life (see Galatians 5:22-23). What is it that God may have spoken to you lately that until now you continue to put off and is not willing to fulfill in your life? It might be a command that you do not want to obey, or a broken relationship that He wants you to restore for His glory, or an opportunity to be a blessing with the people you work with, or a ministry that He wants you to be involved with. Whatever it may be, when you find yourself not obeying, you stifle the Spirit within. When we feel inadequate to what He asks of us to do, don’t forget that the God who called us is faithful. The psalmist declared, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand. Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread” (Psalm 37:23-25). Do not let your circumstances affect your perspective that you will turn away from God. Do not doubt God’s faithfulness. Keep on trusting, keep on believing, and keep on following.
