Conforming our will to God’s will
“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.” Luke 6:46-49
A contractor agrees to build a house. He digs a deep hole, clear down to bedrock. He fills the hole with a strong foundation laid on top of bedrock. Then he builds the house on that foundation. What does he have to fear? Even the worst flood could not harm the house built on a deep foundation on bedrock. Of course, there is the other kind. The contractor wants to get by as cheaply as possible. He does not even bother to dig a hole or lay a foundation. He just starts building a house on the surface of the ground. The flood comes. Instantly, the house falls. Why? It has no connection to bedrock, no foundation. The choice is yours: lip service or faithful obedience; built on the bedrock of Christ or on sinking sand; eternal life or destruction? If He is not the Lord of all, He is not the Lord at all. A person who says with the mouth that Jesus is Lord and Master of life, then never listens to Jesus, never obeys Jesus is inconsistent. A disciple is a person who listens to every word Jesus says and then puts those words into practice in daily living. Even to call him “Lord, Lord,” with seeming respect and acceptance, is not enough. You must put God and the inner life first, the spiritual values in the place that the Lord Jesus Christ teaches and enables you. If you do as He says, you will dig deep and build on the rock, and you will weather all the storms life can bring. If you try to build with only the surface dimension in mind, no foundation, no depth in the spiritual, the house with no foundation will be swept to destruction. You must do what He says as well as hear His Word. Listen to what Jesus said; “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given” (Mark 4:24-25).
