The blessings of obedience

If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully keep all his commands that I am giving you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the world. You will experience all these blessings if you obey the Lord your God. Deuteronomy 28:1-2 When you walk in fellowship with God, you do not have to ask Him to bless you. He wants to bless you! Just as you enjoy surprising someone you love with unexpected gifts, God delights in blessings you with His gifts in times and ways that you might never expect. God’s blessings often come in the midst of our everyday life. From the text, Moses gives his final appeal to the people. A glorious prospect of peace and prosperity awaits Israel, if they “faithfully obey the LORD your God and carefully keep all his commands” (28:1). On the other hand all manner of personal and national disasters will happen to the nation if they do not keep His Word. Blessings come as a result of obedience. When you walk closely with the Lord, blessings will come, regardless of whether you seek them. Blessings from your obedience will also come to those around you—to your children and to your grandchildren. God promised Abraham that his obedience would bring blessing to all the families of the earth. “Your children and your crops will be blessed. The offspring of your herds and flocks will be blessed” (28:4). When we enter into a covenant relationship with God because we recognize His authority and control over our lives, He is there to keep us and bless us. Oftentimes, God’s blessings do not come in spectacular ways but in the ordinary activities of our life. They come just when we most need an expression of God’s love and His reassuring presence. Do not take God’s gifts for granted. When you receive an unexpected blessing always thank God for this is expression of His continuing love and work in you. Be alert to follow His will for your life and do not neglect His commands. When we claim we have fellowship with Him, we will live our lives pleasing Him.

Blessings,
