Treasuring God’s word
My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands. Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the Lord grants wisdom! Proverbs 2:1-6
The wisdom that comes from the word of God becomes the source of principles to which we build a righteous and joyful life. From our text, we are admonished that if we long to grow and develop a scriptural foundation for living, we should turn to the word of God. Getting to know God and the precepts of His word will provide us the wisdom we need that will guide us in decision-making. It also provides us an understanding of how to grow having a healthy fear of the Lord. The text described the joy of discovering the truth from God’s word. It was compared to finding a hidden treasure. As we keep on discovering, the more it keeps us desiring to know more. It is like gold panning, once we discover for a morsel, we try to start digging for gold nuggets. Consequently, our intimacy with the Lord grows stronger. This gives us the confidence and the assurance that God is with us, guiding us and providing us knowledge. When we grow in applying the truth in our daily living, we grow in spiritual discernment. We have a good awareness as to distinguish a lie and false teachings. Though Satan might present something with a semblance of truth, but because we are rooted in God’s word, the Holy Spirit will bring upon our mind His word. The appeal might have fooled us before, but now we become careful in perceiving what is being taught. “Do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God” (1 John 4:1). Growing in discernment and wisdom not only helps us to follow God’s ways but also prepares us for opportunities to serve in God’s kingdom. Gaining experience in knowing God gives us confidence on how to help others in their spiritual walk with God. Let us make knowing Him and growing in His knowledge the pursuit of our lives. “I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead” (Philippians 3:10). Take advantage of the opportunities that God is providing for you to learn from His word. Your pursuit of living right before God developed by growing in your knowledge of Him and His word will be beneficial and greatly rewarded.
