Faith is the victory

For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:4-5 NLT

Part of the chorus of an old hymn says, “Faith is the victory that overcomes the world.” All who had placed their faith in God would claim their victory. Though they will go through many trials while here on this earth, they can experience peace for Jesus said, “take heart for I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Jesus has overcome for us the power of sin and Satan when He was crucified and died at the cross and on the third day rose from the dead. Since He has defeated evil, we who have been born of God will no longer be under the power of sin. Victory and faith in God are synonymous for when we are in God, we have His love and nothing can separate us from His love. Paul writes about this victory and says, “Despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love” (Romans 8:37-38). Nothing in this world will overpower the one who trusts in Jesus. When we look at the lives of those who had lived by faith written in God’s Word (see Hebrews 11), they have been victorious not because they are super Christians. They were men and women, ordinary people who had to face trials and temptations that all of us encounter. It was their faith in God that made them victorious. They were able to conquer because of their enduring faithfulness to the truth of God’s Word. Faith alone does not overcome the world. It is faith in Jesus the Son of God that provides victory. This is the source of our joy, for no matter how difficult life will be, we know that we can overcome for our faith is in our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. There will be moments that faith is weak, but when faith reveals itself in a strong bond between Jesus and the believer, God’s conquering power becomes visible in the life of the believer.
