Living in Christ

John continues to remind Christians that they do not have to continue to live in sin. God has provided us resources so that we will no longer be under the power of sin. It is by walking in His light that we are able to overcome the power of sin. When we are walking in the light, we become honest and expose ourselves to His Word. “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105). We obey God because He is our life. “Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did” (1 John 2:6). Loving God and living for Him means that we are to follow His example. Following Christ’s example leads to several implications in our daily lives. When someone hurts us instead of retaliating or taking revenge, we forgive. “Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:32). Following Christ’s example can also have a great impact to our homes. Husbands love their wives “just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her” (Ephesians 5:25). Wives are able to honor their husbands for they “submit to their [your] husbands’ leadership in the same way they [you] submit to the Lord (Ephesians 5:22 LB). Children are able to submit to their “parents because they [you] belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do” (Ephesians 6:1). When we truly live for Christ, it sets order in our lives and we provide positive influence to the spheres God wants us to affect. We receive strength to be the person he wants us to be when we abide in Him. Let us remain in fellowship with Him just like a branch abides in the vine. “I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Our Lord Jesus Christ lives out His life in us through the power of the Holy Spirit. This is why we need to yield to Him through the Holy Spirit. “Let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves” (Galatians 5:16). When we walk in the light, we please and we live only for one Person—the Lord Jesus Christ.
