Unshakable
Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking. For if the people of Israel did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, we will certainly not escape if we reject the One who speaks to us from heaven! When God spoke from Mount Sinai his voice shook the earth, but now he makes another promise: “Once again I will shake not only the earth but the heavens also.” This means that all of creation will be shaken and removed, so that only unshakable things will remain. Hebrews 12:25-27 NLT
When we consider the teachings of the Bible, it is important to understand that both Old and New Testaments comprised the Word of God. It is unfortunate that there are those who subscribes to the false notion that the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament are two different gods. We bought into the lie propagated by the world that the only reason God came into this world was to meet our needs. This sentimentalized idea neglects the fact that the reason Jesus has to die on the cross is because of our sin. Sin should not be ignored. From the time God spoke through Moses at Mount Sinai, God revealed His disdain with disobedience by neglecting His Word. The Israelites were warned after they were freed from Egyptian bondage that they should not neglect the covenant that was established between them and God and disregard will result to consequence. “You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, while flames from the mountain shot into the sky. The mountain was shrouded in black clouds and deep darkness. And the Lord spoke to you from the heart of the fire” (Deuteronomy 4:11-12a). This is why we cannot trivialize or ignore God’s command. The Lord Jesus Christ took to Himself our sin to forgive us and those that will come to Him and trust Him will be saved. We ought to obey God and His Word: “Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking. For if the people of Israel did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, we will certainly not escape if we reject the One who speaks to us from heaven!” (Hebrews 12:25). When the Israelites neglected God and disobeyed His Word, they suffered the consequence and they wandered in the wilderness for forty years. “Because you complained against me, every one of you who is twenty years old or older and was included in the registration will die. You will not enter and occupy the land I swore to give you” (Numbers 14:29a-30). Those who will commit themselves and keep His Word will be unshakable. “‘When God spoke from Mount Sinai his voice shook the earth, but now he makes another promise: ‘Once again I will shake not only the earth but the heavens also.’ This means that all of creation will be shaken and removed, so that only unshakable things will remain’” (Hebrews 12:26-27). This has been the message by the writer of Hebrews and it is clear that God wants those who will recognize Jesus as Lord and Savior to remain true to their commitment.
