The Ruthless Enemy
“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.” Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.” But Jesus said, “Peter, let me tell you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.” Luke 22:31-34
From the text, Jesus warns Peter that Satan is set out to sift him. Satan is set out to destroy every follower of Christ. In this time, Christians will continue to face a formidable foe. Satan's goals are to destroy your faith, put away your confidence, and defuse your effectiveness. This is why Paul’s reminder is something that every believer should take heed. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). Satan is devious and he is in the lookout for your weakest point and vulnerability and ready to attack when you are least ready. So do not let your guard down. Also remember what Jesus told Peter in v. 32, “I have pleaded in prayer for you.” Jesus is praying for you and interceding on your behalf. "He is ever living to make intercession for us" (Hebrews 7:25). He prays that you will not stumble and ultimately fail. He prays that you will be equipped and strong in your faith that you will not give in to Satan’s ways. The Lord alone is your anchor and strength. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalms 46:1). Do not wait until you are in a heap deep of trouble before you come to the Lord. At the onset of Satan’s attack, trust and be dependent on the Lord.
Blessings.
