God is love
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:7-10
What is love? People everywhere are searching for true love. But in their search, they find it difficult to experience love. For one thing, the culture has cheapened the meaning of love. Because of this, people are finding it hard to give and receive love. There are those that are hurt deeply that they cannot even respond to the love of God. From the text, the apostle John said that God is love. God’s unconditional love was shown in the flesh through Jesus Christ. God’s love was shown through the life, sacrifice, and the gift of Jesus Christ. God is the originator of true love. One could only understand what love is when those people experience the love of God. “Whoever does not love does not know God” (1 John 4:8). Love starts with God. It is God that defines love. He had shown love by what He did and what He does in the life of believers. When you have an understanding of what God does, then it helps to understand the love of God. God’s love brings a person to new life. This new life is a life lived in the light of His character and righteousness. A person that knows the love of God will no longer desire to live in the darkness of sin. “Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God" (John 3:20-21). Experiencing the love of Christ will not only lead you to the truth but will motivate you to live by the truth. Your decision to follow Christ is motivated by your gratefulness to the love of Christ. Being a disciple of Christ is love in action. Jesus’s love was demonstrated not just by saying it with mere words but by His actions. That is what love should look like; loving completely and selflessly. Jesus Christ provided a great example of what true love should look like. You are able to love because you first experienced His love.
Blessings.
