Growing in faith
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Hebrews 11:1-3
Believing faith is what provides confidence to a person that placed trust to Jesus Christ. This is what the author of the book of Hebrews was alluding to from the text. The author of Hebrews listed names of people in the eleventh chapter that demonstrated an undivided confidence in God. Jesus Christ is the object of faith. The apostle John emphasized this as the reason why the Gospel was written. “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). Faith is what individuals appropriate in obtaining the righteousness that comes from God. “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe” (Romans 3:22). Faith is brought about by the conviction from understanding the Word of God. “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ” (Romans 10:17). Faith in God is what will sustain the life in God. “Love the Lord, all his faithful people! The Lord preserves those who are true to him” (Psalm 31:23). In spite of trials and difficulties, it is faith in God that will bring about victory in the life of a believer. Faith is what will motivate you to hold on to His promises, to depend and trust His Word, and to be faithful in living the life in Christ. This life of faith is in contrast to a life of unbelief that God detests. “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.” But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved” (Hebrews 10:38-39). Faith in God is what will help you resist the devil. “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith” (1 Peter 5:8-9). God wants you to grow in your faith in Him for “without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).
