The truth that sets you free
Then many who heard him say these things believed in him. Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:30-32 It is one thing to know about the truth yet it is another thing to experience the truth of God being worked out in your life. God’s truth will have no effect upon you unless you accept it and believe it. From the text, the Lord Jesus Christ told His disciples that one of the characteristics of a follower of God is being faithful in His teachings. The apostle Paul told Timothy that one of the semblances of a Christian that he should expect manifested in their life is godliness. “You will know how people must conduct themselves in the household of God” (1 Timothy 3:15). This is also what he alluded to in his prayer for the Christians in Ephesus that it is for the purpose of godliness that God through the Holy Spirit will work His power to everyone that trusted Him as Lord and Savior. “So that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might” (Ephesians 1:19-20). Are you discouraged at times because you have this sense of burden that something has to change in a particular area of your life? Is there a lack of victory over a certain sin? It is possible that you do not yet completely understand the truth about God releasing you from what can hinder you in becoming the person He wants you to be. If you feel powerless to meet the challenges before you, be encouraged from the promise of Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” If you are defeated by circumstance, hold on to the truth of Romans 8:28 that God can work your most difficult situation into His good. If you are in bondage to a particular sin, work the truth of 1 John 1:9 into your life, which promises that if you confess your sin, God is faithful to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. All of these truths can only happen when you yield to the Holy Spirit’s leading in your life. Perhaps you have already read and heard accounts of God working mightily in the lives of others. But have you allowed God to implement to work out those truths into your life? What truth about God would you like to be experiencing in your life? Ask Him to implement that truth into your life today. God’s truth will never restrict you. God’s truth will always set you free!
Blessings.
