There’s freedom in Knowing the Truth
Then many who heard him say these things believed in him. Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:30-32 From the text, the Lord Jesus Christ told the people that placed their lives in His hand that they are His disciples. He commanded them to remain faithful in His teachings. Once they do this, they will discover what true freedom is all about. God’s teachings are found in His Word. Even if you read them regularly, yet if you are unwilling to obey and live by His Word, it would not be able to free you from the power that enslaves you. Unless you allow God to implement the truth of His word in your life, you will not experience the freedom that results in living by His word. Just like the Apostle Paul, unless he trusted God’s working upon his life He will not experience the freedom and strength of doing things through Him. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). He could have felt defeated when he was imprisoned because of his faith, yet while he was jailed physically, he could still declare the freedom he experienced living for Christ. “We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). Even in the most difficult situation Paul has been, he still could count on God’s working for he knew that He is accomplishing His purposes in his life through those difficult times. “We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them” (Romans 8:28). If you will not allow the Lord Jesus Christ to set you free, you will continue to live in bondage. This was His assessment to those people that will not place the trust of their lives in His hand. He even called them out in their unbelief towards Him and the Father. “Why can’t you understand what I am saying? It’s because you can’t even hear me! For you are the children of your father the devil... So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe me!” (John 8:43-45). Yet to those that surrendered and trusted Him, He declared, “If the Son sets you free, you are truly free” (John 8:36). God’s truth will never restrict you for just like what the Lord Jesus Christ said; the truth will always sets you free! Always remember how Christ revealed Himself. “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!” (John 14:6-7). The truth of God’s Word will become real in your life when you yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit. As Jesus told His disciples, “The Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you” (John 14:26).
