Now is the time to offer our true worship
But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus told her, “I am the Messiah!” John 4:23-26
What a declaration coming from Jesus Christ; the One Who has everything, the center of creation, and the Omnipotent God is seeking something from those among whom that professes faith in Him. What could He be seeking? The text declared that He is seeking a worshipful response to His sacrificial love. We find the strongest statements regarding worship in these passages in the New Testament. Immediately, we learn from the Lord Jesus Christ what God is looking for when we offer our worship to Him. It is in the attitude of our hearts that He is after when we worship. What matters to God is our recognition of who He is in our lives, having the supremacy over all things. Worship must be done in the truth as revealed in His word and centered alone in Christ. It is inexplicable to think that Jesus seeks those that will offer Him true worship but the truth is He really does. Jesus desires that those who claim they have placed their faith in Him should worship Him in spirit and in truth. God is seeking worship from those who are not taking for granted knowing Him as Lord. Worship is not about being religious but an expression of our gratefulness because He reached out to us through the cross. When Jesus healed the ten lepers and only one returned to be thankful He asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give glory to God?” (Luke 17:17-18). The Messiah has been revealed, the gospel message has been proclaimed, life and light were provided and so the time has come “when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.” Therefore, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need” (Matthew 6:33).
