The infinite value of knowing Christ

Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith. I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead! Philippians 3:8-11

Paul from the text expressed the intensity of the nature of his relationship with God. He declared that there is nothing in this world could compare with the “value of knowing Jesus Christ my Lord.” The pretext of this passage was the awe he expressed of what Jesus had done to obtain our salvation when he emptied himself and took the form of a servant. Then in His obedience to the Father’s will, died a criminal’s death on the cross and later on when He returns for the second time, He will take His proper place where every tongue will declare that He is Lord (see Philippians 2:6-11). Paul articulated his intimate relationship with God thus he could claim that Jesus is his Lord and that relationship superseded everything; “For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage” (Philippians 3:8b). He embraced the life God gave him including the abuse and hardships he continued to endure (see 2 Corinthians 11:23-29). He had no regrets, he will not look back, and there will be no hidden longing. All these so he could gain Christ not just in this life but in the life to come. Though others may think that he could stand before God with all his credentials and righteousness, but in his encounter with Christ, he realized that it is only in God’s righteousness received by faith in Christ he could stand before God. Our only confidence and hope should be found in Christ alone. This is why we should not stop growing and knowing Christ in our lives. This passion to know Christ more will energize our lives to live for His glory and to have the motivation to tell others of the reason why we have faith in God. Our desire to know Christ more will help us yearn to be identified with Him. Let us follow Paul’s example and have this as our prayer: “I want to know you Lord, to really know you more.”

Blessings,
