One thing I desire

The one thing I ask of the Lord—the thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple. For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock. Then I will hold my head high above my enemies who surround me. At his sanctuary I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and praising the Lord with music. Psalm 27:4-6
From the text, David expressed his faith to God. He was in awe at the realization that he could be in the presence of God and how he longed to be in His presence, "all the days of (my) his life." David began with this Psalm acknowledging God as light; “The Lord is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid?” (v.1). God is a light to His people, to show them the way when they are in doubt, to comfort and rejoice their hearts when they are in sorrow. It is in His light that they now walk on in their way, and in His light they hope to see Him forever because of the salvation He provides. It is in God that we experience security. Who would have guessed David who grew up tending his father’s sheep in the mountains and in the wilderness where there was quietness, now had to contend with trouble because King Saul was filled with jealousy and was after him to kill him? The events that followed after he killed Goliath were overwhelming. Though he showed humility, respect, and graciousness to the king, he was still sought by him because King Saul was jealous of his popularity. God led David to more valleys of troubles and they were deeper than he could imagine. Yet, he found comfort and strength in the knowledge that God is with him. David wrote most of the Psalms when he was dealing with brokenness running as a fugitive. In the Book of Psalms, we read about how God honed and refined his character during those times of troubles. We are recipients of these examples in the life of David that we can emulate. These teachings are important especially when we find ourselves struggling about the reality of God and our minds are filled with doubts for in there we could find comfort knowing that God does His best work in us when we are in the crucible of trials. Instead of doubting God’s presence in times of troubles, let us desire what David desired; “The one thing I ask of the Lord—the thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple.”
