My very present help in times of troubles

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge... The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble! God’s voice thunders, and the earth melts! The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. Psalms 46:1-3, 6-7

This Psalm provides encouragement when we are dealing with troubling times. When we look around and hear that we are heading to worst of times, we can easily panic. David, in this Psalm, finds strength in the knowledge that God is “always ready to help in times of trouble.” We can take comfort knowing that even when times become bleak and gloomy, “God is our fortress.” God’s strength is always available immediately. Whatever we go through in life will be use by God as His vessel of His grace so we could grow. Trials that we go through in life are at times will hit us deeper to the point that they reach our guts and shake our sense of security. This is what David was referring to when he used phrases such as, “earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge... The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble!” Yet, no matter how deep our struggles are, we can call on God for He is our very present help in times of troubles. He is very much engaged in our life and His power over us is encompassing. He replaces our fear with confidence not because we have the strength to overcome but it is in our dependence on Him that assures us that He is there to protect us. The challenge then for us is to cease in striving, instead “Be still, and know that He is (I am) God!” (v. 10). When life stresses hit us right down to the bone, let us call on Him and recognize that we have a God always ready to help.

Blessings,
