Moses did not assign any allotment of land to the tribe of Levi. Instead, as the Lord had promised them, their allotment came from the offerings burned on the altar to the Lord, the God of Israel. Moses had assigned the following area to the clans of the tribe of Reuben. Their territory extended from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Gorge (including the town in the middle of the gorge) to the plain beyond Medeba.. Joshua 13:14-16 NLT
Joshua implemented what Moses had started where the Levites did not receive any inheritance. “Instead, as the Lord had promised them, their allotment came from the offerings burned on the altar to the Lord, the God of Israel” (v. 14). The Levites are in the service of God and it is the work of God that will carry them and provide for them. This principle holds true while time lasts. This system has been instituted so that they will not be distracted with tribal affairs. “I want you to do whatever will help you serve the Lord best, with as few distractions as possible” (1 Corinthians 7:35). Another reason is that they should not be bounded by geographical boundaries for they will be assigned in different parts of the forty-eight cities so they can be accessible to the people (see Numbers 35). “At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi...to stand before the Lord as his ministers, and to pronounce blessings in his name” (Deuteronomy 10:8). They were called to a life of worship and service. Each one of us is called to a life of worship and service. These acts of commitment are the result of God’s inward working in the life of believers. There is a precious, inward relationship with God that prompts us to serve Him and to be involved in external work for him. For any work to be effective there must be an honest motive within, a brokenness of spirit, a fervent devotion, and a vibrant prayer life. Devotion to God burns at the heart. Out of our relationship with God flows service for God. When the love of God prevails in our hearts we would do his command with great joy. Our hearts would be captive to do His will whatever the cost and wherever He leads. So, do not be a borderline Christian. Be committed to His inheritance, the salvation He gave us and choose to follow His will for our lives. God’s will is His expression of His love to us and is always the best for us.
Blessings,
