Christ’s Exaltation
For this reason God highly exalted him
and gave him the name
that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
every knee will bow—
in heaven and on earth
and under the earth—
11 and every tongue will confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)
After Christ humbled Himself and fulfilled the Father’s plan of redemption for the world by dying on the cross and being resurrected three days later, Jesus was exalted, “For this reason God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name.” Jesus was given a position of honor, as seen in Hebrews 12:2, “For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” As Anders states, “He became the object of worship for the church. He became the Master instead of the servant. The church became His slaves and looked to Him as their Lord. All this is a result of God’s exalting the humble, obedient Son.”
Then, in verse 10, the Father declares to the world, “that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow—in heaven and on earth and under the earth.” Everything will acknowledge Jesus Christ, including those that oppose Him. All will declare the truth, in verse 11, “and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Anders again sums it up nicely, “In God’s heavenly precincts, in humanity’s earthly home, and in the devil’s domain below the earth, every tongue will worship Jesus for who He is: The Lord, the Sovereign of the Universe.” If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, this is the almighty Lord you serve, who humbly sacrificed Himself to save you, and is now exalted above all. May we live our lives in honor of the One who deserves all our praise.
