Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. Joshua 1:7-8 NLT
When God wants to accomplish something, He will prepare those who trust Him and are committed to live their lives for His glory. This is what we saw in the life of Joshua. He submitted to God’s authority by following His word. When Moses was still alive, Joshua followed his leadership then when the leadership was turned over to him, he did not neglect His orders from the Lord. This is what we read from the text; “Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you... Study this Book of Instruction continually... Obey everything written in it.” Not only that Joshua was obedient to God following His word, he also lived by faith. He was willing to wait on the Lord to fulfill His will. This is also what we have been called for; to follow the examples of those who endured because of their faith. “You will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance” (Hebrews 6:12). When we hold on to God’s promises, we are able to look forward to the fulfillment of those promises. This is also what prompts us to come to the Lord in prayer. Our trust and dependence upon God and His word will help us to be courageous. Courage is the ability to stand regarding what we believe God is telling us to do from His word. We might not have the same calling as Joshua, to lead an army but we are called to have courage facing the challenges of life and not be overcome with timidity but with strength that comes from God’s working through our lives. Courage includes standing up against sin. Joshua also lost some battles but, in his humility, he admitted his failure before God. He did not give up instead he sought God’s presence and working in his life. He walked with the Lord for he is motivated to glorify God in what he does. He told the Israelites to be aware that God was among them and that they have to live their lives glorifying Him. “Today you will know that the living God is among you” (Joshua 3:10). Let us walk with the Lord always mindful of who we are, enjoying His presence, serving and glorifying Him.
Blessings,
