The unchanging God

Remember your leaders who taught you the word of God. Think of all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas. Your strength comes from God’s grace, not from rules about food, which don’t help those who follow them. Hebrews 13:7-9 NLT

The writer of Hebrews emphasizes the importance of not forgetting those who helped us avail of wisdom from God’s Word that influenced our lives in positive ways. He challenged us to consider “all the good that has come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith” (Hebrews 13:7). This is what prompts those who has been given the task to be God’s undershepherds to straighten up and live their lives pleasing before God and His people. They have been called to provide words of encouragements so that the church would be strengthened as they face tumultuous times enduring persecutions. It will be good if these types of leaders will always be available but some are not for they have moved on following God’s call and others have passed on to the next life. How we wished they could be around to provide us counsel. But we have someone who is available; “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). The finiteness of humanity points to the fact that our existence here on earth is limited but we have the Lord Jesus Christ who is unchanging to which we can always count on. God knows that we need someone we can always lean on and that is what He provides for us. “Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands. They will perish, but you remain forever; they will wear out like old clothing. You will change them like a garment and discard them. But you are always the same; you will live forever. The children of your people will live in security (Psalm 102:25-28). Our Lord and Savior had since ascended into Heaven, yet He continues to minister to us and intercedes for His children. “For Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us” (Romans 8:34). No matter what lies ahead of us and whatever uncertainties we will be facing, we must focus on Christ as well as remembering the influence we had of people who went ahead of us so that we will remain strong and not drift from the sea of change. Let us not forget that we have a God that never changes.
