To put our trust in God
Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God—God remains in him and he in God. And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. 1 John 4:15-16 CSB
The ones to whom Jesus came to save are the ones who “confesses that Jesus is the Son of God.” John once again must emphasize this truth. These words by themselves are simple enough but should not be considered as mere confessional statement. When we look at this statement, John brings us to a theological truth that every person who made such confession understands that he or she is declaring the Jesus is Lord. Such declaration comes through the conviction of the Holy Spirit. “‘No one speaking by the Spirit of God says, ‘Jesus is cursed,’ and no one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit’” (1 Corinthians 12:3). The confession that “Jesus is the Son of God” declares Jesus’ both humanity and divinity. This is in contrast with the false teacher’s claim that Jesus Christ was not fully man and was not physically present, which is also refuted by John and the apostles personal witness of Jesus, for if Jesus was not physically here on earth, He could not have died on the cross. The term “Son of God” has its root from the Old Testament prophecies. “I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son” (2 Samuel 7:12-14). “‘I will declare the Lord’s decree. He said to me, ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father’” (Psalm 2:7). The Gospels are eyewitness accounts of what Jesus physically did on earth, dying on the cross to save us from sin, and speak of who He is, the Son of God. This section then ends with John repeating the affirmation made earlier in 1 John 4:7-11, in which God’s love lives within the believer. God’s character is rooted in His love, and believers experience this love through relationship with Him. In that regard, believers can share this love to others that they too may know of Jesus Christ, His love displayed on the cross, to give them new life full of love.
